Difference between Sushi and Sashimi
A lot of people assume that Sushi and Sashimi are a similar thing, using these terms interchangeably whenever. But the fact here is that they are two different and separate food items. Both Japanese though.

Sushi VS Sashimi
What is Sashimi?
The literal meaning of the word Sashimi is a pierced body. Where Sashi means pierced, and Mi means body, basically the meat. Translated into a world understood language which is English, it refers to fish that is uncooked.
In a more general aspect, Sashimi can be defined and identified as a piece of meat which does not have to be seafood necessarily. It does not even have to be raw. Sashimi is draped over a garnish like Daikon typically, which is Asian white raddish that is cut or shredded into longitudinal strands. Being accompanied by perilla leaves on every slice.
Sashimi is usually served with a dip such as soy sauce, or similar to that, along with a paste form of wasabi or ponzu sauce. Ponzu sauce is a citrus sauce that is made by mixing lemon sauce, soy sauce, dashi, mirin and rice vinegar.
Sashimi is comprised of different forms, some of which have been mentioned below.

- Whale Meat (Gei-niku)
- Sea Urchin (Uni)
- Scallop (Hotate-gai)
- Puffer Fish (Fugu)
- Yellowtail (Hamachi)

Sashimi- Raw or Cooked?
Not every Sashimi that you would come across is raw. it should be noted, that octopus which is a very popular sahimi item can be served raw. But, it is served as a boiled, cooked item normally because of its chewy nature.
Tataki is a kind of Sashimi that is seared on the outside in a very light manner. Effectively cooking it from the outside, leaving the insides raw. Briefly marinating it in vinegar after this and thinly slicing it. Later seasoning it with ginger which either grounded or in the form of a paste.
So, a lot of Sashimi dishes are served raw, whereas some of them are cooked.
Sashimi- Not Just Seafood
Despite what other say, Sahimi is not just an ordinary seafood. Considered a Japanese delicacy, Toriwasa is also one of its forms which consists of chicken. Along with a Sashimi comprising of horse meat known as Basashi.
